Often sold as true covers, these were exposed by Peter Smith and Dr Byam in QC 50 (in English, 1957) and L’OP 100 (in French, 1959) – both available on our website – as forgeries using a genuine 3m on 2p Due surcharge from troops serving in Sudan. The classic error was mis-spelling of “Feild” in “Field Service”. Addressed to Victor or Henry Nahman, brothers who were genuine collectors taken in by a postal employee, many bear a monogram of V/N indicating their source in the Victor Nahman collection.
